PREFACE

In the modern period of fifth information revolution, computers and internet, the role and significance of information have grown qualitatively, often becoming decisive in almost every area of human activities. At the same time the significance of information is directly linked to its content. If information contains spiritual and intellectual values, then it becomes a pillar for development and enhancement of an individual and the society. However, if it spreads disinformation and unconstructive ideas, then it is reasonably compared to weapons of mass destructions. Currently large-scale information warfare are carried out in global dimension, proliferating beyond borders and posing most serious threats on countries that are involved in conflicts, including Armenia (Republic of Armenia and Nagorno Karabakh Republic) and the whole Armenian society. In such situations having the necessary and sufficient information (that is, knowledge) is the main guarantee for security.

The mentioned realities have made information security problems more than pressing matters. It has to be noted that Armenian-language literature in this area is scant. This circumstance prompted Research Council of the Noravank Foundation to make a decision and undertake creation of both an information security dictionary and a training course. The course will be ready to launch somewhat later, whereas the English-Russian-Armenian dictionary of information security containing 2772 entries on military and communications information security, and computer security is presented to the readers now.

The dictionary is intended for experts involved in information security and data protection, researchers, engineers and PhD students, as well as business people interested in problems of information security. As a first attempt for such work and particularly, due to the issues of modern terminology in Armenian language, this dictionary may not be free of omissions and other shortcomings. We do hope that the readers will present their comments in this regard to the author and publishers, which will allow creating a better dictionary in future.
